Born on the family estate in Holland. Well educated with a brilliant mind he came to New York and on to San Francisco in 1849. Founded one of the first banks in San Francisco, The San Francisco Savings Union. Founded the import export firm of de Fremery & Company, importing fine wines. Was a writer of force publishing several books, among them the first book on California Mortgages. Repeatedly President of the Chamber of Commerce. Appointed in 1862 by his government in Holland as Consul of the Netherlands to San Francisco. Also from 1850 - 1866, was appointed Consul by the former Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The Order of the Knight of the Netherlands Lion was bestowed upon him with full honors for his philantropic activities. Active in the management of his Savings and Loan; the American Sugar Refining company and Several Oakland Street railway companies. On his passport, he is listed as 5'11" tall, brown eyes and dark brown hair. A pioneer of San Francisco whose contributions were banking, government and publisher of several books. James de Fremery died on a train in La Junta, Colorado, on his way back to California from a trip to the Netherlands.
