GERALD BENTON (PECK) HEMPHILL died at his home, 120 Elm St., Friday at 11:15 pm after an illness of 7 months, aged 53.
Born and reared in Bakersville, the son of Clinton D. and Florence (Bowers) Hemphill, he had resided in Hagerstown for the past seven years.
He drove for the Local Taxicab Co. for some years. He was a member of the First Brethren Church at St. James.
Surviving besides his wife, Esther Moats Hemphill, are: children, Mrs. Frances Payton, Mrs. Margaret Spessard, Mrs. Catherine Boward, and Donald, all of Hagerstown; Henry C., in the Armed Forces, Germany; Robert, Blaine and Frederick, all at home; mother, Florence V. Hemphill, Chicago; two grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Henry Simpson, Elon College, NC; Mrs. Norman Wolf, Hagerstown; and Mrs. Robert Gossard, Chicago; brothers, Porter, Hagerstown; Russell H., Security; Irvin W., Crocket, Calif.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at A. K. Coffman Funeral Home, the Rev. Walter B. McKinley officiating. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Williamsport. Drivers of the Local Cab Company will be honorary pallbearers.
