Philip Zimmerman, 86, of Sioux Falls, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House.

Philip G. Zimmerman was born June 3, 1927 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He moved with his family to Wentworth, SD where he lived until his was 16 years old. At that point, he lived in Madison, SD for one year before moving to Sioux Falls. He completed his senior year of high school at Cathedral High School.

In December of 1944, he entered military service and served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Bremerton, Washington. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in July of 1946. Upon his return from the Navy, he worked for Kampeska Air Service. It was there that he met his future wife, Donna Gatchell.

On December 28, 1948, he was united in marriage with Donna at Sioux Falls, SD. In 1950, Phil began his career with the Sioux Falls Fire Department. He served the department faithfully until his retirement as a Fire Captain in 1977. Throughout his years with the Department, Phil also was involved with owning and operating several other business ventures in Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Daniel (Peggy) Zimmerman of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Della) Zimmerman of Brandon, SD, Kathleen Zimmerman and Karen (Scott) Van Diepen, both of Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren, Matthew Zimmerman, Kristen Zimmerman, Jonathan Zimmerman, Audra Gruenwaldt, Alexander Zimmerman, Gregory Zimmerman and Ashley Jahsman; 6 great grandchildren, Ben Gruenwaldt, Leslie Jahsman, Zoey Zimmerman, Olivia Gruenwaldt, Todd Jahsman and Carrie Jahsman; two sisters, Therese (Jim) Fejfar of St. Joseph MO, and Mary Ann (Duane) Mahlsteadt of Sumner, WA; and his brother, James (Shelia) Zimmerman of Santa Barbara, CA.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin 10:30 am Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
