Amelia Hewes was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Elihu Hewes and Elizabeth Cogswell. Elizabeth was the daughter of Francis Cogswell and Elizabeth Rogers and great granddaughter of Rev. John Rogers, all of Ipswich, Masschusetts. In an ancestral history published in 1918 referencing her daughter's marriage to Sias, the Rogers line was said to go back to Rev. John Rogers, the Martyr, but more recent work would cast doubt on this story.

At the age of 19, Amelia was first married to Arthur Young on Apr. 29, 1781 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. There are no known children of this marriage. Arthur was lost at sea in 1784.

She married Captain Benjamin Rogers on Aug. 28, 1788, in Boston. Captain Rogers died at the age 48, on Apr 27, 1806 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Amelia survived him by 44 years. She never did remarry. Amelia's marriage to Benjamin Rogers brought together two separate "Rogers" families. Benjamin's family was from Newbury, Massachusetts area, and Amelia's mother's Rogers family was from Ipswich, Massachusetts. These Rogers families also originated from separate areas in England.

Benjamin and Amelia had three children.

1. Amelia Rogers, b. 1789; d. 1856; m1. William Hewes (1780-1817); two sons, William Hewes and Charles Edwin Hewes; m2. Rev. Solomon Sias; two children, Amelia Sias and Solomon Sias.

2. Benjamin Mayo Rogers, b. Nov. 29, 1796 in Newburyport. (probably died young).

3. William Cogswell Rogers, b. 1800; d. 1862; m. Caroline Dudley, they had six children.

Amelia lived to the age of 89 years, dying at her daughter's house in Newbury, Vermont on Oct. 30, 1850, (3 months after the 1850 census was taken).
