George W. Benner, one of the oldest residents of Emaus and, until his retirement two years ago, an employee of the Donaldson Iron company for nearly 50 years, died late Monday night at his home following a stroke of apoplexy, in his 75th year. Mr. Benner was stricken as he was about to retired for the night. He had been in ill health for the past two years and had several previous strokes.
He was a son of the late Samuel and Hannah, Weikel, Benner and was born near Vera Cruz. For the past forty-five years he resided in Emaus, where he was highly esteemed and respected. He was a member of St. John's Reformed church, and fraternally was associated with Von Steuben chamber, No. 33, K. of F.; Fellow Employees association and Emaus Fire company, No. 1, Emaus; Milford lodge, No. 273, K. of P., Limeport; and Milford castle, No. 29, K. of M. C., Vera Cruz.
He is survived by his widow Emma, Titlow, Benner; one son, Charles Benner, this city; and three daughters, Mrs. George Reinsmith, Mrs. George DeEsch and Mrs. Vernon Hartman, Emaus. Twenty-five grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Jonas Benner, this city; and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Funk and Mrs. Mary Miller, Emaus, also survive.
The funeral services will be conducted at his late home, 325 South Seventh street, Emaus, on Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. D. E. Schaffer, pastor of St. John's Reformed church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Moravian cemetery, Emaus.
