Hormel, son of the company's founder, was determined to find cause for several thousand pounds of surplus pork shoulder. He developed a distinctive canned blend of chopped pork and ham known as Hormel spiced ham that didn't require refrigeration. As a result of his successful marketing campaigns and promotions, 70% of urban Americans used canned meats in 1940, compared with only 18% in 1937. By 1946, Hormel Company was the largest independent meat processing establishment in the U.S.
