MERCEDES, TX - Mercedes C. Avila, 99, was called home on August 8, 2013. Born in Penitas, Texas on September 27, 1913, her family relocated to Mercedes, after the influenza epidemic of 1918 claimed her father's life (Vicente Chapa).

She spent most of her life as a Mercedes resident. Her long life allowed her to see many changes come to the Rio Grande Valley. She enjoyed telling stories of her youth, especially of traveling in a horse-drawn buggy to visit relatives across Hidalgo County and reminiscing about her days working in the citrus packing sheds. Mercedes was a long time member of the Woodmen of the World Society and the Amigos de Mercedes, she had great pride in her home town. She will be remembered as having a strong work ethic and as someone who was always willing to help others.

Mercedes is preceded in death by her husband, Juan Avila; parents Avelina and Vicente Chapa; and her siblings; brothers: Gilberto (Isabel), Guadalupe (Lucinda), Vicente, Raul, Roberto (Alicia), and Ramon (Blanca) Chapa and sisters Natividad (Juan) Rodriguez and Maria (Celedonio) Perez.

Numerous nieces and nephews across the country are left behind to remember and cherish her memory.

Visitation will be held Sunday Aug. 11, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel, with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday Aug. 12, 2013 at 10:00 am, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes, interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery also in Mercedes.
