The Reverend Mr. Kenneth Paul "Ken" Knopp passed away in Fredericksburg Texas Monday 15 July 2013.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated 24 July, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. Msgr. Enda McKenna officiated, with Ms. Mary Ann Murchison as pianist, and Ms. Annette Whittington as vocalist.
Interment is planned in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date, Kenn has donated his body to science. A vigil and rosary service were held 23 July at St. Mary's.
Ken was born 22 March, 1934 in Fredericksburg to Jacob P. Knopp and Ruth Brown Knopp.
Ken graduated from St. Mary's in Fredericksburg, Class of 1952, then enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin in 1953. He left the University and entered the US Army in 1955. He served in Germany in the years 1955-1956, anjoying the opportunity to visit the land of his heritage, and do a bit of Genealogy.
After his discharge from the Army, he returned to the University and graduated with a degree in Journalism. He later became a Sales Representative for Artex Clothing for 20 years.
In 1976 he was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church. He also founded the American Volksmarch and was instrumental in the local Bed and Breakfast, with what is remembered as the first Bed and Breakfast here.
He was well known as an Author, and wrote and published several books on Gillespie County, Fredericksburg, and the surrounding areas.
Another of his accomplishments was an intimate and almost encyclopedic knowledge of the old people and families of Fredericksburg. If it had ever happened, Ken knew about it, and was most times willing to share stories, some of which have gone on with Kenneth.
He loved Fredricksburg, and was always more than willing to donate his time and efforts to help in any way. He was an ardent supporter of anyone wishing to write a tale, and always free with advice and support.
Ken leaves behind one brother. Jacob L. "Skip" Knopp, and more friends than most. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Minna Knopp. He will long be remembered by his coffee mates at the Old German Bakery.
