Son of Jonas and Deborah Smute Bechtel

Married Ellen Sophia Giauque Sept 19, 1868 in Birmingham, Van Buren County, Iowa

Obituary of Berryman Bechtel.

Berryman Thomas Bechtel was born on a farm east of Birmingham, Iowa, December 10, 1849, and died in Minneapolis, Minn., on Tuesday, November 26, 1918, aged 68 years, 11 months and 16 days.
He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Bechtel, who were early settlers of this neighborhood. His early manhood days were spent in this vicinity, and united in marriage about fifty years ago with Miss Ellen Giauque. They lived on a farm east of Birmingham for quite a number of years, then moving to Chicago. Later they moved back to Birmingham, residing here about four years, until the death of his wife which occurred in January 1902.
To this union were born six children, one daughter preceding them in death. Four sons and one daughter remain to mourn his departure: Florein, Charles and Bert, of Chicago, Ill., and Earl of California; Mrs. Rose Nettleton of Minneapolis, Minn.
For some years he has suffered with heart trouble. On Monday preceding his death he had been at the home of his daughter in Minneapolis, apparently in his usual health, but the following day, while on his chicken ranch, about nineteen miles from that city, he was stricken with this affection of the heart, and lived but a short time. He and his family will be remembered in Birmingham and vicinity by the older residents, and will be better known as Bell Bechtel, as he was called here.
The remains were brought to Birmingham last Friday and tenderly laid beside his wife, a short service being held at the grave. His sons Charles, Florein and Bert of Chicago, and daughter Mrs. Nettleton and husband of Minneapolis, accompanied the remains to their resting place.
