Obituary of Mary Evelyn Gibbs Chipman

CHIPMAN
GREENVILLE - Funeral services for Mary Evelyn Gibbs Chipman, 80, of Greenville will be at 3 p.m today at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Greenville. She died June 11, 2009, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville. Mortimer Funeral Home , Greenville, has charge of arrangements.

She was born in Jonesboro, Ark., Feb. 25, 1929, during a blizzard. Jonesboro was much beloved in her heart and mind until her last day. Her family moved to Greenville during the Great Depression, and she had lived here ever since. After high school, she married William Gayle Chipman Jr. and had two children.

Mrs. Chipman, or "Meg" as her friends knew her, was an avid artist and still painted until recently. She will be remembered for being "never afraid to try something unconventional" for a women, both in art and in life in general. Using her funds from her art, she and Bill traveled to New Zealand twice, and many other places. Together they created "Mary's Vineyard," making it a spot of beauty near Ethel, Miss. During the last few years, her Covenant Presbyterian Church family has been just that, giving and ministering to her when she could not go to worship with them.

She is survived by her son and his wife, William Gayle Chipman III and Cindy Ware Chipman; her daughter, Sarah Ellen Chipman Parish and her husband, Keith; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Chipman Kibler and her husband, Daniel, Sarah Emily Parish, Hannah Gayle Parish, Isaac Parish and William Judah Parish. Memaw's first great-grandchild is due in two weeks.

If anyone wishes to send a memorial in lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Bass Capital Campaign for Delta Center Stage (P.O. Box 14, Greenville, MS, 1865 S. Main St., Greenville, MS.

Visitation will be today at 2 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
