Iona May McDole was one of two children, both girls, born to Charles Edgar McDole and his wife, Letitia Helen Dye McDole later Rakes. Charles McDole used his middle name Edgar and the last name of his step-father, Nason growing up, although McDole was his legal name.

It appears that when Iona May and her mother, Letitia, went to Titusville, her sister, Lola May, was with her grandmother, Polly McDole, who was blind. It has been difficult to fill in the pieces for these sisters of this period.

My grandmother, the daughter of Iona Mae's sister, told me the Civil War hard on families, including theirs. I was young and regretfully did not ask more detail.

Iona Mae and her husband George Hughes had nine children. Two died very young--Frank and Elgin.

When Iona Hughes passed away, some of her children were underage and either before or at her death, went to live with others. Florence Hughes went into the household of Ruby, her sister. Later, the youngest (Walter) lived near Florence in Camillus.

There is record of Clarence having gone into an Orphan's Home and after 3 years there went to live with a family and was living with them when he died in 1926.

Son Archie H. Hughes enlisted in 1916, but was discharged in 1917 to care for his mother (Iona) and children. It is clear that she probably was not doing well health-wise at that point.

Betty Hoyte is the great granddaughter of Iona May and I am the great granddaughter of the sister, Lola May. I did this FG branch of the family for Betty.

The photo in this memorial is the only photo I have of Iona May and it is cropped from a photo of Iona May and her sister Lola May McDole later Donaldson.

Iona is now linked to her father and a photo was found in his Civil War file. His 2nd wife did a thorough job of documentation to obtain a pension.
