Joaquim Macedo, 84, of New Bedford died Wednesday May 24, 2006 suddenly at home. He was the husband of Margarida (Andrade) Macedo; they were married for 60 years.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Manuel and Kilda (Martins) Macedo, he lived in New Bedford since 1966.

Mr. Macedo formerly worked as a school teacher in Cape Verde.

Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Edmundo Macedo and Manuel Macedo, both of New Bedford, Antonio Macedo of Wareham, and Thomas Macedo, Leontino Fortes, Antonio dePadua and Osvaldo Gomes, all of Florida; four daughters, Erlice Rodriguez of Brazil, Iris Ribeiro of Hawaii, Helia Macedo-Fields of Marion and Helena Morton of Florida; two brothers, Olavo Macedo of Stoughton and Alceu Macedo of Kingston; four sisters, Nilza Varela of Brockton, Palmira DeVales and Eugenia Carvalho, both of East Providence, and Sr. Maria Fernanda of Boston; 26 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Nilo Macedo and Heloisa Castro, and brother of the late Lourdes Macedo Almeida and Carlos Macedo, who was his twin.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
