Ellen Metzger was born February 14, 1839, in Pickaway County, daughter of John and Elizabeth Statler Metzger. She was married in Pickaway County on September 9, 1860, to Andrew Valentine, son of Joshua and Margaret Drum Valentine, natives of Frederick County, Maryland, and Berks County, Pennsylvania, respectively. They were the parents of 5 children: Charles J., Henry Clement, Mary Jenetta (died in infancy), Minnia A. and Phoebe Jane Valentine. The family moved to Auglaize County, Ohio, in 1870, settling in New Knoxville. Four years later, Andrew passed away, leaving Ellen with three children. In 1877, she married Peter Schafer, a native of Germany, with whom she had another daughter, Elizabeth Schafer. Ellen passed away in New Knoxville on September 20, 1909, and was buried there on the 23rd in Olive Branch Cemetery.
