Founder of the sugar-processing industry in Imperial Russia. After a brief and uneven furl career at the royal court, he retired from service and settled at Bogoroditsk, establishing one of the first Russian sugar refineres there. Later he moved his operations to the Ukraine, making various agricultural activities the main source of family income. It was because of him that Russia stopped importing sugar from abroad.
He also published a treatise on economic theory and set up a society for the development of railways, which financed the contrruction of the first railway in Russia.
His contributions to the national economy were commemorated by a bronze statue erected in Kiev.
