Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery was founded by Peter the Great of Russia in 1710, in honor of a Russian prince and a Russian Orthodox Saint, Alexander Nevsky, who had defeated the Swedes in the Battle of Neva on July 15, 1240 and the Battle the Ice on April 5, 1242. A wooden structure, the Church of the Annunciation, was consecrated on April 25, 1213 as a Russian Orthodox Church. On September 12, 1724, with Saint Alexander Nevsky becoming the patron of St. Petersburg and the Russian army, his relics were solemnly transferred from Vladimir to the monastery by decree of Peter the Great. During the Russian Revolution in 1917, an attempt to convert one of the churches to a military hospital was met with resistance with a physical altercation between the Bolshevik military and the congregation, resulting in a priest being killed. During the years of the Soviet Union in 1922, Saint Alexander Nevsky's massive silver sarcophagus was relocated to the State Hermitage Museum without his relics. His relics were archived until 1989 when they were returned to the monastery. In the 21st century, the Saint Alexander Naevsky Monastery is a huge complex, which spreads over several park-like acres with churches, cemeteries, and other facilities. Three cathedrals are located on the grounds: the Annunciation Church, the Feodorovskaya Church, and Holy Trinity Cathedral with burials within the churches. The cemeteries are behind high concrete walls and contain the grave sites of many prominent Russians.
