According to Hazzard's History of Henry County, IN, 1822-1906 Vol. 2, William was born to Tristan and ? Barnard. He was married about 1805 in NC to Matilda Gardner, and they moved to Union County, IN after 1815, then to Fayette County, IN. They were devout Quakers and the parents of thirteen children: Lydia; Paul; Eunice; Mary; Isaac; Phoebe; Barzellal; Margaret; Wm D.; Melinda; Anderson; Byron; Sylvester; and Levina. They were members of Poplar Ridge Meeting House. William, Matilda, and Phoebe are buried at Poplar Ridge Cemetery, Jackson Twp., Fayette County, IN.

Update 31 July 2014: William was the son of Tristram Barnard and Margaret (Folger) Barnard. He married Matilda Gardner, December 1, 1805, in Guilford County, NC. They were counted in the 1820 Census in Union, Franklin County, IN. They later moved to Fayette County, IN.
