BENTON - John H. Eames Jr., 85, of Benton, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta campus. He was born in Benton on July 27, 1919, the son of the late John H. Eames Sr. and Doris (Thruston) Eames.

He was married to Leahbelle Buzzell Eames, before she passed away on Feb. 12, 1997.

For 39 years, Mr. Eames was employed by Maine Central Railroad as a machinist and retired after 39 years of service. After retiring he continued to set valves and worked on air brake systems on steam locomotives for various railroad companies throughout New England and New York. He also helped on the family farm as a mechanic to keep the equipment running.

As a young man he attended Benton Falls Congregational Church, and was a lifetime member of the Siloam Lodge No. 92, A.F. & A.M. in Fairfield.

He loved being with his family, and enjoyed his machine shop. He also enjoyed his vegetable garden, and restoring his 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck, and his 1931 Ford Model A roadster.

He was predeceased by a brother, George Eames.

Mr. Eames is survived by two sons, Fred G. Eames I and his wife, Hazel, of Winslow, and Richard L. Eames and his wife, Marilyn, of Winslow; eight grandchildren, LeAnne Linnell and her husband, Eric, of Winslow, Bradley Eames of Clinton, Jonette Rood and her husband, Eric, of Albion, Freddie Eames II, and Shawn Eames of Winslow, Sheldon Eames and his wife, Vonie, of Vassaboro, Jason Eames of Virginia, and John W. Eames of Winslow; eight great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.
