Ernest J. Oehl, 80, Ex-Meat Packer, Dies
Ernest J. Oehl, 80, a member of a pioneer San Bernardino family which established and operated a meat packing business here for 55 years, died in a San Bernardino convalescent home yesterday. He had been a patient there for more than a year.
Oehl, who lived at 3430 Circle Rd., was born in Socorro, N.M., Aug. 11, 1886. He came to San Bernardino with his parents, Julius and Catherine Oehl, when he was 6 months old.
Julius Oehl established the Oehl Packing Co. and Oehl's market in 1887. Following their father's death, Ernest Oehl and his brothers operated the business until it was dissolved in 1942.
Oehl was a life member of the San Bernardino Elks Lodge and was the sixth oldest member in point of service of the lodge from which he recently received his 50-year service pin.
Oehl's wife, Blanche, died in 1962. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Clifford R. Stewart, of Perris; three brothers, Herbert C., Conrad H. and Richard J. Oehl, all of San Bernardino;
a step-son, Walter Secor of Glendale, a former reporter on The Sun-Telegram and now a member of the editorial staff at the Los Angeles Times.
Funeral services are pending at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel. The Elks Lodge will be in charge.

Ernest Oehl passes away
Ernest J. Oehl, a member of a pioneer family that established and operated a meat packing business in San Bernardino for more than half a century, died Sunday at the age of 80.
Oehl, whose father established the Oehl Packing company in 1887, operated the business along with his brothers, following his father's death. The meat packing plant was located on E street, near what is now the junction of the Redlands and San Bernardino freeways. The plant closed down in 1942.
Funeral services are pending at Bobbitt Memorial chapel. The Elks Lodge will be in charge.
