Katherine V. Albertson's Childhood
Katherine Virginia Albertson was born on 25 Nov 1859, in Edgefield, Davidson County, Tennessee at the close of the Civil War. As a child, she often played with cannon balls found on her parent's property. Her parents, Benjamin Henry Albertson and Jennie Buchanan Bailey along with their children, fled the South. They left all their possessions behind. During this time the family was watching a military parade from a hotel window or balcony. One of their children, Flora Albertson, was very small at the time and yelled, "Hurray for Jeff Davis!" The soldiers rushed into the hotel and were ready to burn it down until the manager explained that Flora was too young to understand who Jeff Davis was.
Benjamin Henry Albertson and his family moved to a farm south of Edina, Knox County, Missouri. His wife, Jenny, died when Katherine was about twelve years old. Katherine was to have the total of four mothers during her lifetime, as her father married that many times.
Katherine and her sister, Flora, attended a Catholic school in Edena, Missouri. Katherine was full of devilment while Flora was more serious-minded. Katherine obtained and emptied the bottle of Holy water the Catholic nuns used to sprinkle the beds with. Then she filled the bottle with well water. The nuns never knew and thought they were sprinkling the beds with water blessed by the Pope.
