Petie was born on March 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Christian and Marie (Wick) Mayer in Kiel. She was a graduate of Kiel High School with the class of 1949. She worked part time for Leverenz Shoe Factory and the Hansen Glove Factory while raising her family.
On August 12, 1950, she married Melvin G. “Spitzee” Christel at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. He preceded her in death on July 27, 2013.
Petie was a “Jack of all Trades”, master of some! She was very creative, enjoying writing, drawing and sewing, and could be quite the talker! She was also a very caring person, maintaining her motherly presence in her adult children's lives, her grandchildren, and especially her life-long bond with her twin sister, Millie.
Petie is survived by her four children: Michael (Mary) Christel, New Holstein; Rick (Jean) Christel, Sheboygan; Duane Christel, Plymouth; and Darlene Christel, Plymouth; six grandchildren: Jennifer (Dale), Angel, Dallas, Jenny (Jy), Brian, and Trevin. She is further survived by 11 great grandchildren, her twin sister: Millie Schuh; her god-daughter: Diane; her sister-in-law: Willodene “Willy” Mayer; and other nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Petie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters: Sr. Tarcisius “Charlotte” Mayer, Madonna Bowe, Dolores Mayer and Imogene Mayer; two brothers: Robert Mayer and Frances Mayer, two brothers-in-law: Art Schuh and Charles Bowe.
The Funeral Mass for Petie will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 413 Fremont Street, Kiel. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will greet and visit with relatives and friends at the Church on Thursday from 9:00AM until the time of services at 11:00AM.
In Lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Petie's name.
The family wishes to THANK the caring staff at Calumet Medical Center of Chilton during her brief stay; and to all the staff who have become our friends and extended family at the Atrium Post Acute Care of New Holstein for always going above and beyond, who truly loved us and our mom.
