A married carpenter living in West Roxbury MA at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted on May 21, 1861 in the 1st Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.

He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry on March 5, 1863. He was wounded twice during the attack on Fort Wagner SC in July 1863. He evaded capture by concealing himself in a marsh before making his way back to Union lines. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on August 15, 1863 while in a hospital.

He was never to return to the 54th Massachusetts Infantry from medical leave because he was promoted to Captain in the 56th Massachusetts Infantry on January 25, 1864. He resigned from the army on May 16, 1864 due to disability.
