On an unrecorded date, James m. Mary Bourn(e), dau. of Shearjashub Bourn(e), Esq. and Bathsheba Skiff, b. Oct. 21, 1678 of record at Sandwich, Mass. She d. May 22, 1722 at Chilmark. According to the History of Martha's Vineyard, James and Mary had eight named children, none of whom have connective birth entries in the published Town of Chilmark or adjoining Town of Tisbury vital records.

Per town records, James died on Feb. 14, 1723/4, his gravestone not reflecting the double year convention for the month of February prior to the 1752 calendar conversion. On the day James died he was 49 years old, and Ætatis (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 50, meaning he was born on or after Feb. 15, 1673/4.
