Mrs. Nila (Ambler) Carruthers, 90, of Los Angeles, Calif., and a former longtime resident of Middletown, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, in Los Angeles of heart and kidney failure. She had a fall about two months ago and did not fully recover.

She was born in Macy, Ind., in 1909, to Charles and Goldie (See) Ambler. In her younger days, she was active in Girl Scouts, Y-Teens, the Presbyterian Church's Bible School, Head Start Programs and crafts for the church bazaars. She had also served as a deaconess for her church. She loved music and travel and was an artist and an active painter all of her life, inspiring two following generations of artists, painters and musicians. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was lively, free-spirited and a unique individual. She was active until her fall, taking long daily walks. She took pleasure in her new great-granddaughter, the flower garden and going for lunch with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Many loved her and will miss her presence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Goldie Ambler. She was the devoted wife of Sam (Maurice E.) Carruthers, director of special metals at Armco Steel Co., who passed away in September, 1983. Her son, Peter A. Carruthers, who was a prominent University of Arizona physics professor, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Carruthers is survived by a daughter, Sally Carruthers Hooper of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren, Peter Carruthers of Ithica, N.Y., Debra Carruthers of Espanola, N.M., Katheryn Carruthers Daniels of Norfolk, Va., Cynthia Hooper of Eureka Calif., and Amy Hooper Deogard of Los Angeles; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Carruthers, Colelman Dean Hooper-Weidle, Valerie Ann Deogard and Eva Daniels; a sister, Mary Shipley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a brother, James Ambler of Sevierville, Tenn.

ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Woodside Mausoleum in Middletown, with the Rev. Tom Ramsey officiating. Arrangements are by Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home of Middletown.
