Mary was one of six siblings born to Rev. Ralph Cudworth, former chaplain to King James I. Her mother was former nurse to the first born son of King James I, Prince Henry of Wales. Her father died early in her childhood and her mother remarried to another rector. He took over the work at St. Andrew's in Aller which her father started. Her mother and step-father moved the family to London just before her death, where he served as reverend for St. Mary's Aldermanbury in London.
