Malinda Milsap was the daughter of Byrd (aka Bird) Milsap and Gemima Morrow.

She married Volney S. Gray on March 27, 1859, at Jackson County, Iowa. To this union was born:
- Milton Gray (1860-1943)
- Alice Gray (Mrs. William Breeden)(1862-)

Volney S. Gray served in Company I, Iowa 31st Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and died Feb. 3, 1863. He was the son of Russel and Melissa Gray.

Malinda married Civil War veteran Thomas Harvey McCoy. To this union was born:
- George B. McCoy (1872-1970)
- Ida B. McCoy (Mrs. Easter) (1874-1912)
- Olive Mae McCoy (Mrs. Correll, Mrs. Clatt) (1878-1971)
- Earl Jay McCoy (1885-1957)
