In Memoriam
Mrs. Bettie H. Atwood

At the sudden passing of Mrs. Bettie Holloway Atwood, loved ones near could hardly believe that in a few moments her soul had winged its flight to the immortal home, a mansion which God has prepared for those that love and serve Him.

She was born in Covington county July 8, 1876 and was the daughter of Mr. John and Mrs. Maggie Meeks Holloway. She spent her early years in Covington county and later they moved to Mt. Olive. She was married to Mr. Henry Atwood of Pachuta and they lived there until his death in 1929. Since then she has made her home with her brothers and their families in Mt. Olive and Carson. She was lovingly called "Miss Bettie" by her many friends whom she loved and cherished.

She loved her church and was faithful in attending the Sunday School, Woman's Society and church services whenever her health permitted. Her life was spent in usefulness and service to those who needed her and she ever sought to comfort hearts and homes that needed cheer. Surely, the world was made better because she lived in it.

At the funeral services held at the Mt. Olive Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Schultz, pastor, in charge assisted by Rev. L. T. Nelson, pastor of the Carson Methodist Church, beautiful tribute was paid to her noble life. The many floral designs testified in silent terms the esteem in which she was held by sorrowing friends and loved ones. She was laid to rest by her father and mother in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Besides two brothers, Mr. G. W. Holloway of Carson and Mr. W. A. Holloway of Mt. Olive, one sister, Mrs. Fannie Calhoun of Meridian, a number of nephews and nieces, she leaves a step-daughter, Mrs. A. H. Adams of Scottsdale, Arizona, and other relatives. A sister, Mrs. Kate Rogers, died last fall and two brothers died several years ago.

Her upright character, unswervering devotion to duty and pleasing personality won for her many friends. She had a great and tender heart controlled by a Christ permeated spirit. No more shall we see her cheerful countenance or listen to her gentle voice, but we feel that she lives on in our hearts each day. Often in lonely moments we shall feel the presence of her purified spirit calling us on to higher and better things. Let us resolve to follow her even unto the presence of God.

"It seemeth but a little way to me,
To that strange country, The Beyond,
For it has grown to be the Home
Of those of whom I am so fond.
And so for me there is no Death,
It is but crossing with abated breath
A little Strip of Sea,
To find one's loved ones waiting on
the Shore
More beautiful and more precious
than Before."
