Andrew Lawing was most likely born in Anson County around 1761, in the area that soon (1762) became Mecklenburg. Land grants indicate that his father William Lawing was in the Mecklenburg area by 1764 at the very latest, and the Anson County deed abstracts list William as a payee of the estate of Andrew Barry, who died prior to 21st April 1761. (There are many trees on Ancestry and elsewhere that give his place of birth as Burke County. This is unsubstantiated and cannot be true, if for no other reason than the fact that Burke County was not founded in 1761. Also, he was NOT born in Tennessee. One of his brothers, as well as his father, later went to Tennessee, but this was years later, after 1808.)

Andrew was the son of William Lawing and Jane/Jean Killian. His home was located in Mecklenburg on the Catawba, near to where Garr Creek fed into the River at Mountain Island, as is evidenced by the information contained in his North Carolina Estate file from 1825. At the time of his death, he held over eight hundred acres of land in the area.

Please note that, to date, I have yet to come across any document showing Andrew Lawing to have a middle initial of H. Therefore, I do not include it or any other initial in his name until proven otherwise. I beg fellow researchers to do the same.

Although the stone is now very difficult to read, Dr Sommerville in his History of Hopewell Church, published in 1939, records that Andrew's marker at Hopewell reads: "Died June 5th 1825, Aged 64 years."

The Catawba Journal (19 July 1825) reads, "Died, in this county, on the 5th ult. Andrew Lawing, Esq. aged about 66."

A Bible record originally from William A Lawing (Andrew's son), and now in the hands of the descendants of Mr Ralph Underwood, states the following, "Andrew Lawing died June the 5th Sunday morning 4 o'clock forty minutes 1825."

I have chosen a birth date corresponding with the age of death on the tombstone.

Andrew's wife was Obedience "Biddy" Bradshaw, the daughter of Josiah Bradshaw and Elizabeth Armistead. She died the 9th of September 1846, but it is unknown where she is buried, presumably next to Andrew at Hopewell in a grave now unmarked. However, this has not been proven.

Andrew and Biddy's children are:

David J L Lawing
Robert Lawing
John Killian Lawing
Andrew Lawing Jr.
Jane Lawing Hutchison
William A Lawing (the middle initial does not stand for Andrew; possibly Armistead?)
Middleton Lawing
Samuel L Lawing
Frances Killian Lawing Hutchison
