Obituary: West Sussex County Times - Saturday 31 October 1908
DEATH OF MR H. BOYD WALLIS
We regret to record the somewhat sudden death of Mr. Henry Boyd Wallis, which took place at his residence, Graylands, Horsham, early on Saturday morning, from heart failure. The deceased, who was 67 years of age, spent the greater part of his life in South Africa. Few men knew more than he did about the inner working of South African affairs. He had worked the diamond mines, fought with the Boers, and was acquainted in his time with Mr. Cecil Rhodes and other celebrities who loomed large in the life of that Continent. Thus it was that Mr Boyd-Wallis, of no mean conversational powers, had a boundless store of interesting reminiscences. He left South Africa in 1884, and after residing at Wimbledon, took up his residence in Horsham in 1894, purchasing Graylands and adding considerably to the estate. Deceased leaves a widow and grown up family of five sons and four daughters, with whom much sympathy is felt. It will be recalled that the eldest daughter married Mr Maurice Dewing, a well known solicitor in Horsham ; and the second daughter [married] Mr. H. L. Havers, of Angmering. Mr Boyd-Wallis’ second son married recently in Vancouver Island.
