Roe was a 21-year-old Bootmaker from Milford, MA, when he enlisted on December 6, 1863 and was mustered into service on December 9th. He was captured and taken as a prisoner, when 275 men from Companies G and H of the 2nd Mass. H.A. surrendered to opposing Confederate forces at Plymouth, NC on April 20, 1864. Roe died at Andersonville on August 14, 1864 due to Scorbutus.
