Alice (Jordan) Cowan was born July 14, 1878 in Stark Co., IL. She was the second of fourteen children born to Zeri A. and Sarah (Boswell) Jordan. Her mother immigrated from England at the age of 3 in 1860. Her father was a farmer.

In 1897 she was married to John A. Cowan. In 1900 they were living and farming in Milo and Wheatland Townships, Bureau Co., IL. They had five children and moved to Souix Township, Clay Co., IA and then Riverton, Clay Co., IA. Alice passed away at the age of 34 on July 21, 1912. Her husband, John passed away April 5, 1919. In 1920 her oldest daughter, Ina was living with Alices' sister, Gertrude Jordan in Arcola, IL, daughter, Ruth was living with a family in Spencer, IL working as a servant, and her three youngest sons were living with her parents, Zeri and Sarah Jordan in Clay Co., IA.

Alice was survived by husband, John Cowan; children, Ina, Ruth, Lester, Ralph and Gerald Cowan; parents, Zeri and Sarah Jordan; sisters, Gertrude Jordan, Mrs. Lola Mincer, Gladys (Don) Mayhew and Eva Cleo Jordan all of Clay Co., IA, Mrs. Mary (Frank) Euard of Kewanee, IL, Mrs. Margarette (Burean) Jackson of Stark Co., IL, and Mrs. Lena (O.J.) Carver.

She was preceded in death by sister, Anna Jordan in 1887.
