Charles Melvin Alwine died at Witham Memorial Hospital on July 10, 2013, from complications of a brain tumor. He was a fighter, having survived numerous life threatening illnesses since 2000.
Born on March 30, 1929, in Three Rivers, Michigan, he was a son of the late Cleotis Melvin and Ruby (Fitch) Alwine. He spent the first part of his life in the Chicago area with his father. Charles graduated from Walkerton High School in northern Indiana. He served three years in the United States Air Force. After the service, Charles worked at South Bend Studebaker for two years and retired from Detroit Diesel Allison in 1981 after 30 years of employment. At the time of his retirement he was an inspector in Non-Destructive Testing. For a period, after his retirement he owned the Alwine NDT Testing Lab in Lebanon.
Charles was a member of Fairview Methodist Church in Bloomington. He was Past Master of Advance Masonic Lodge No. 664, a member of Hazelrigg Lodge No. 200 in Jamestown, and most recently he was a member of Boone Lodge No. 9. He was a past member of the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine in Indianapolis. Other memberships included, the Lebanon Elks No. 635, in which he served as a Trustee for many years and in 2012 was elected to a life membership. He enjoyed playing cards with his brother Elks. For several years he enjoyed riding motorcycles, taking extended trips, and he belonged to the Boone County Motorcycle Club. He had a passion for collecting; attending garage sales, flea markets and auctions.
Charlie was always ready to assist anyone who needed help and enjoyed trying to keep the housing addition in which he lived safe and attractive. He was meticulous about his yard work and up until recently worked in his flower beds and fed the ducks and fish in the pond.
In 1972 he married Sandra Canada Taylor who survives. He was a loving and attentive husband who always remembered birthdays and anniversaries. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Tom (Evelyn) Alwine of Bloomington, Tim (Susie) Alwine of Flora, and Jeff Alwine of Bloomington; a daughter, Jill; two granddaughters, Kristina Alwine Hutchins of Terre Haute and Marissa Pattengale of Brookston; two grandsons, Tommy Alwine of Chicago and Michael Alwine of Fort Wayne; two great grandsons, Gabriel Matherly and Noah Pattengale. He is also survived by nieces and nephews by marriage including, Michael (Conna) Canada of Cullman, Ala., whom he enjoyed visiting at Smith Lake as often as possible, Carole (Mike) Hoskins of Jamestown, and Marcia (Steve) Bruce of Santa Fe, N.M.; a niece, April (Scott) Priotrowiez of New Liberty and a nephew, David (Debbie) Reed of Walkerton; and numerous great-nieces and greatnephews. Charles is also survived by special friends, Raymond and Marie Everett.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Reed; a brother, Michael Alwine; his stepmother, Dorothy Alwine Winland; and a daughter, Sandra Grey.
Visitation will be 5 to 6:30 p.m.Tuesday, Aug.13, at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon . Elks rites and Masonic rites will follow visitation at 6:30 p.m. Memorial Services are planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Myers, the Rev. Karen Ottjes, officiating.
Interment will take place at Jamestown IOOF Cemetery in Jamestown.
