Katherine Margaret Bell was born on November 28, 1880, in Kukus, a small town on the Volga River in Russia, just south of Saratov.
She was the last of four children born to George Philip Bell and Katherine Metzger. Her siblings were Katherine, Conrad, and Katherine Elizabeth. The Bell Family was part of a community in Russia known as Volga Germans; Katherine the Great had invited Germans to Russia in the 1760's. Volga Germans began to immigrate to the United States in the 1880's, including the family of Katherine Margaret and Jacob Baum, in about 1901.
