The son of Peter Jones, in 1860, he was a brick maker living with and/or working for Benjamin Uglow in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsyvlania. He married Mary Jane Mitchell and fathered Laura E. (b. @1864), - married Harry K. Bermont), Clara E (b. 12/??/72 - married Cyrus Foltz), Mary E. (b. @1874), Minnie B, (b. 09/??/79), and Margaret Grace (b. 08/16/82 or 83 [per her death certificate, but she is in the 1880 census as a ten-month-old - married Lyster M. Fahnestock).

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. B, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 24, 1861.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Chambersburg August 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh October 11 as a private with Independent Battery B, Pennsylvania Light Artillery, then re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer in early 1864. He honorably discharged with the battery October 12, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.

In 1895, he was living in Allegheny County and described himself as an asthmatic "in an emaciated condition, helpless, and in a destitute condition." Mary died September 10, 1897, and per his pension file he married widow Rebecca Catherine Bodder, née Stagmates [?], although she never appears in a census. He moved back to Chambersburg where he died at his home from "bronchial pneumonia" at the reported age of 84-9-18. He had been a member of Housum Post No. 309, G.A.R.

The stated age at death in the previous paragraph appears in both his obituaries [see attached] and his death certificate, the later including a birthdate of April 14, 1838, while his tombstone asserts 1837. That birth year is almost certainly wrong, starting with his two stated ages at enlistment. Twenty-three-year-old recruits were not prone to understating their ages by five years, much less twice. Further, his birth year is listed as ca. 1843 in the 1860 and 1900 censuses, the 1910 census has ca. 1841, and 1880 and 1920 censuses claim a ca. 1846 birth year. His exact birth date likely will never be known, but he almost surely was not born as early as 1837 or 1838.
