OBIT:
Man Killed - The practice of persons walking on the railroad is a very dangerous one, and the frequent killing of those using this thoroughfare as a footpath does not seem to deter others from the same dangerous habit. Last Saturday afternoon, the Mail train going west struck and instantly killed Abram Evans a resident of Miller Township, who was walking on the track in the vicinity of Marshall Furnace. The engineer did all in his power to prevent the accident but Mr. Evans who was apparently unconscious of danger, continued his walk towards town. The train was stopped as soon as possible and the mangled corpse brought to Newport. An inquest was held by Coroner Zinn, and the following verdict rendered. "That Abram Evans came to his death by being struck by engine No 60 drawing Mail train going west on Saturday afternoon, March 7, 1874, while walking on the track, about three-fourths of a mile east of Newport station"
The following is Dr Orris' evidence before the jury:
I personally examined the body of Abram Evans, and found the following injuries: A compound comminuted fracture of the right parietal bone, a fracture of the occipital bone on the right side; the right hemisphere of the brain being lacerated to a slight extent. There was also a dislocation of the neck - The Axis from the Altus - a simple transverse fracture of the middle third of the humorous or arm bone; also a compound comminuted fracture of the leg. Either of the two first injuries would have been sufficient to cause death.
