It is said she is the daughter of Abraham & Jane Forrest, I think maybe an adopted child or grandchild. They had no children in the home in 1850 and both he and Jane were in their 40's. 1860 Mary is with them at age 5 along with a 16 year old girl named Amanda Fly. This census does not give relationship for Mary or Amanda to them. Possible that the girls parents died when Mary was an infant and they took them in, also possibility they lost daughters and/or son and they are their grandchildren. Since Jane's birth year did not change in between the two census, she may of had a late in life child (Mary Melvina) at 45. With no other information it is quite hard to say, if she is their daughter, Grandchild or taken in child. Jane had died by 1870 and Abraham now in his 70's was married again to a woman in her late 50's with three small children, way to young to be their children, though listed as such.

Mary was united in marriage in 1869 at age 15 in Wright County, to John Smith Finley. To this union 15 know children were born.

They lived in the Norwood area of Wright County, Missouri farming and raising their children until moving to California before 1910, where they remained.

Sister-in-law to my Great Grand Uncle.

Update May 13, 2018 (now we know how she came to be with Abraham Forrest)

Mary Melvina Forrest is the Niece of Abraham Forrest. Her mother died when Mary was very young and his brother, (most likely Watson "Patter" Forrest) gave Mary to him to raise. Abraham's first wife died and he married Jane Fly. One day a close family friend, Harriett Elizabeth Wyatt Finley went to visit and found young Mary on the floor scrubbing. Jane was standing over her with a whip. Harriett grabbed Mary and took her to her home. Mary was raised in the Finley home and married their son John Smith Finley. They had 15 children who are; They had 15 children: Luke David Hill, 1869; William Fielden, 1871; Charles, 1873; James, 1875; Frances (Fanny), 1877; Harriet (Hattie), 1879; Margaret, 1881or2; Sidney, 1884; Ida Pearl, 1885; Ruby, 1887; Arthur, 1889; Walter, 1892; Gilford, 1894; Dorothy Ruth, 1897; Lillian Myrtle, 1899. . I am the youngest grandchild of their 14th child Dorothy.
