The son of Benjamin & Martha Kaufman, in 1860 he was a teacher living in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, June 10, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, as a corporal with Co. I, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (aka 30th Pennsylvania Infantry). He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant June 27, 1861, to captain November 14, 1861, and to major September 20, 1862 (March 1, 1863, also reported). Wounded at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862, he returned to duty and later brevetted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He honorably discharged with his regiment June 13, 1864. He then recruited what eventurally became Co. A, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, elected as captain, but mustered in Harrisburg as colonel of the regiment September 4, 1864. Captured at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, November 17, 1864, he was incarcerated first at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, then shipped cross state to Danville prison. He was paroled, date not yet determined, returned to duty with the regiment April 14, 1865, and honorably discharged with the regiment May 31, 1865.

In 1873, he moved to Iowa where he married Emma J. unk. and fathered Howard C. (b. @1886).
