Elizabeth Stephanie "Tia" Irwin Elder was the second born child of John Nichol Irwin and Mary Love Rankin Irwin. Elizabeth, or "Beth" to her parents and siblings, spent much of her adult life in the company of her widowed mother. Beth married widower Joshua Elder, a former mayor of Keokuk, late in life in Keokuk, Iowa on September 12, 1931, when Beth was 56 years old and Joshua was 67 years old. From 1902 on she formed a close bond with her only niece, Mary Stephanie Kendrick, and was affectionately known as "Tia" (Portugese for "Aunt") by Mary Stephanie and her descendants. After her husband's death in 1940, Beth moved back into the family home in Keokuk at 633 Grand Avenue to live with her brother Jack and sister-in-law Florence.
