James Elmer "Shorty" Armstrong was the son of Silas Jackson and Cora Belle Armstrong. He was married twice and had children by three different women. He married Anna E. Justice on Apr 1, 1919 in Vanceburg, Lewis Co, KY. They had one daughter, Edith (Wilhelm, Stevens, Kiogima, Houston). He married Leah Kimbler on June 5, 1924 in Vanceburg, Lewis Co, KY. They had seven children: Cora Belle Thurman (Otis); Frederick Thomas (Norma, Pat, Lucy); Hubert Jackson, who accidentally drowned at age 16; Elnora Florence Thurman (Harold); Chloe Evelyn Hughes (Lynis); James Herbert (Velva); and Harrison Edward (Darlene). He also had a child with Leah's sister Nellie Kimbler, a son named Ermal Eugene who was killed in WWII. Shorty died of a gunshot wound from Dick Toller as Shorty was coming up on his porch. His death certificate reads "Gunshot wound in middle of abdomen/ Homicide, 12-gauge shotgun; he was drunk and tried to enter a man's house." Mr. Toller was not charged.
