The son of John George & Nancy (Radel) Weidel, in 1850 he was living with his parents in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but was indentured to a family named Zimmerman from age seven through fourteen. He married Sarah Belles September 28, 1850, and fathered Emanuel (b. 1851), Louisa (b. 01/03/53 - married Henry Acaley), John H. (b. 06/13/54), Catharine (b. 02/??/59 - married Jerome Landis), Sarah E. (b. @1861 - married Jonathan F. Hawk), William L. (b. 01/06/66), Jacob U. (b. @1869), Allen G. (b. 08/08/72), and Eve (b. 05/02/76, 03/28/79). In 1860, he may have been living in East Salem Township, Juniata County, but he lived in Wiconisco Township most of his life.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in East Salem, Juniata County, October 1, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 24 as a private with Co. D, 151st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863.

A lifelong miner by profession, he was buried for hours in a coal cave in, a terrifying incident that reportedly inflicted injury not only his body but his emotional state as well.
