Eva was the daughter of George A. McDonald and Mary Angeline Loudy. She was the oldest child in a family of 4 boys & 4 girls. Her father was a farmer, living for a time at the St. Croix Indian reservation in northwest Wisconsin, near Hertel in Burnett County. According to family information, this is where Eva was born.

Eva and John met in Minnesota, when their families lived across the Mississippi River from each other. They became great friends, attending church and parties together. They married at St. Cloud, MN on January 5, 1876. They had six children; Oscar Alanzo McGee 1876, Harrison James McGee 1878, Etta Lenore McGee 1881, John Merritt McGee 1888, Eva Angeline McGee 1891, William Edwin McGee 1896.
