Mary's husband Charles immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1849 when he was thirteen years old.

Circa 1861, he married first wife Margaret. They had two children together. Son Charles was born on 9 Sep 1862 in Indiana. Sadly, he died just shy of his first birthday on 20 Aug 1863. Charles and Margaret welcomed daughter Mary on 28 Sep 1865 but death also claimed that infant just over a month after her birth. Charles and Margaret appeared on the 1870 Census, living in Center Twp. (part of Plymouth), Marshall, Indiana, where Charles was earning a living as a blacksmith.

Seven years after that census, Margaret died on 27 Jul 1877 at age 45.

Charles married Josephine Renkert shortly after Margaret's death and the couple settled in Bremen, Marshall, Indiana. Josephine was also born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. with her family prior to 1850. They first settled in Tuscarawas, Ohio, but moved to North Twp. (also part of Plymouth) by the 1860 Census. Sadly, Charles and Josephine's happiness was short-lived as Josephine died in the summer of 1879 on July 22 at age thirty three.

As they say, the third time's a charm, and thus was the case for Charles when he married third wife Mary Graham in 1880. Mary was born in Philly of two Irish parents. Charles and Mary would raise seven children together during their 37-year marriage.

1. Ray Charles (pictured in back row, second from the left in attached photo) (b.11/18/1880 Bremen, IN d.17 May 1965 La Porte, IN) Ray married Mable Estella Medbourne on 7 Mar 1899 in Marshall Co., Indiana and they had four children together--Cleatis Graham (1900-1967), Vera Lucille (1904-1942), Delores Irene (1906-1991) and Leola Mary (5/29/1911-2/12/2003).

2. Lloyd John (b.10 Oct 1883 Marshall Co., IN d.29 Dec 1970 Palm Beach, FL) Lloyd married Mary L. Primley on 29 Jun 1912 in Marshall Co. The had a daughter together.

3. Dorothy "Dot" Ellen (b.1885) Dorothy married husband John sometime after 1920.

4. Roscoe James (b.14 Jan 1887 Plymouth, IN d.Mar 1968) James married Daisy Helfick/Heflick on 20 Mar 1909 in La Porte Co., Indiana. They had a son together.

5. Ethel S. (b.21 Aug 1888 Plymouth, IN d.9 Mar 1976) Ethel married Joseph W. Goodall on 14 Mar 1908 in Plymouth, Indiana. The had two sons together.

6. Algernon "Algie" Christian (b.1 Sep 1890 Plymouth, IN d.20 Apr 1968 Plymouth, IN) Algie married Mary VanPherson on 16 Jun 1917 in Marshall Co.

7. Julia Albina "Biney" (b.1894 d.after 1976) Julia married and had two sons and one daughter.

I couldn't find Charles and Mary on the 1880 Census. As they married that year, they may not have been together when the enumerator came around. I did catch up with them twenty years later on the 1900 Census. Charles was earning a living doing "street work" and Mary was taking in laundry to help make ends meet. Son Ray, aged 20, had married the year before and left, but the other six children were still at home with their parents. Lloyd (enumerated as John S.), aged 16, was working for the railroad ("section haul"). Ellen was 15, Roscoe (enumerated as Passo) was 13, Ethel was 11, Algie (enumerated as Alvin), was 9, and Julia was 7.

When the 1910 Census rolled around, Charles and Mary were still living in Plymouth. Charles, aged 74, but not yet retired, was earning a living doing odd jobs. Daughter Dorothy (enumerated as Margaret E.) was bringing in a little money working as a seamstress, and son Algie was employed by Edgerton Manufacturing Co., the largest producer of basket and fruit packaging products in the U.S. On this record, Charles confirmed that his marriage to Mary was indeed a third marriage. Mary indicated (as she also had on the 1900 record) that all seven of her seven children had survived to that census.

Charles died three years before the next enumeration in 1920 on 17 Sep 1917. He was 81 years old.

Mary appeared on the 1920 Census, living in Mishawaka, St.Joseph Co., Indiana, with daughters Dorothy, aged 35, and Julia, aged 24. Both girls were working as shoemakers for Mishawaka Woolen Co., making woolen, knitted, canvas, leather and rubber footware.

When Mary died in 1925, she was laid to rest next to Charles, his other two wives on his other flank.
