John Short, a farmer, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Everson) Short, was born June 18, 1836 in Pennsylvania and died December 17, 1864 in West Virginia. His father moved the family to West Virginia before the 1850 census. John married Mary Ellen Tetrick on 27 Nov 1860 in Harrison county, WVa (sometimes reported as 1859 because the previously recorded marriage was December 1859). They had two children: Charles Ashby Short and Samantha Jane Short (who married Robert Robinson Hardesty). In 1861, his father and stepmother Susan deeded him 90 acres in Mud Lick Run in Harrison county, close to Shinnston.

A post-Reconstruction era history published 1912 says he was killed "while on duty on a farm on Laurel Run" (or, alternatively, because he was a pacifist) by the West Virginia Home Guard and say "it was no more nor less than a cold-blooded murder", the History of Upper Monongahela Valley, 1912 (but note that book has other errors, including the date of birth for Charles Ashby Short's daughter Zillah) https://www.google.com/books/edition/_/V_kxAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0
