Raymond was born at Blue
Mound, Ill., May 19, 1882, the
second child of William and
Etta Ellrich. At the age of
13 he moved with his parents
to a farm east of Newell. In
1910 he was married to Rose
Heilig and settled down in
Newell. Five children were
born of this union, Eva, Ruth,
Loren, Jean and William. He
studied and worked with
steam engines, later going into
the automobile repair business
as one of the pioneers
in the field. His next line of
endeavor was in graveled road
constructing putting in some
of the first graveled roads in
the county. Raymond, in 1924,
bought the tile factory from
Newell Cement Tile Co., operating
this business until
1947 at which time he sold
the business to his son, William.
He served the town of Newell
and its consolidated school
district by active membership
on the Town Council and the
Newell School Board for a
number of years, contributing
his share of knowledge and
vast experience to the welfare
of the community. He was
recognized and honored by
the community by being chosen
Mr. Newell of 1955. He
served with the Board of Trustees
of the First Methodist
Church for the past 25 years.
Raymond's first wife passed
away in August 1934. In 1939
he was married to Bertha
Kjarsgaard who preceded him
in death in 1953.
Raymond was devoted to his
family and enjoyed a close association
with the things of
nature. His entire Christian
life was guided by the laws
of God as he understood them.
He took special pleasure in
serving others.
