Born on Feb. 23, 1921, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Isaac and Sinda Jordan Moore. Dorothy was a 35-year employee of Williams Shoe Company and a retired nurse's aide from Mercy Hospital. During World War II, she stuffed mattresses in the basement of the post office for the war effort, was a life member of the Prisoner of War organization and her favorite pastime was writing poetry and was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Portsmouth.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, Carl Ackerman, whom she married on Dec. 6, 1948; six brothers, Harvey, Albert, William, Thomas, Ted and John Moore and three sisters, Eva Weaver, Marie Ackerman and Ruby Meeker.
Dorothy is survived by two sisters, Edna Shonkwiler and Maxine Goad, both of Portsmouth, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the ADKINS-BRANT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with Pastor Tom Charles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. The family will receive friends at Adkins-Brant Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
