Marie T. Atkins, 86, widow of Gale A. Atkins, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Marion Chapter 72 Order of the Eastern Star and of the Democratic Party. Mrs. Atkins was also a former member of the Board of Directors for Smyth County Department of Social Services and was a volunteer.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Albert Gale Atkins II. She is survived by two sons, Stephen G. Atkins and Gale Atkins III, both of Marion; one foster sister, Mary Lillian Clark of Chilhowie; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Charles DeHart officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Marion, where graveside services will be conducted by Marion Chapter 72 Order of the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
