Quiel, Norwald R. CARLSBAD -- Cdr. Norwald R. Quiel, USN Ret., born November 24, 1922, passed away at his home in Carlsbad, California Friday, July 5, 2013. Norwald, "Dick", is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gloria "Dolly" and his five sons: Thomas of Carlsbad, CA; Steven (Wendy) of Roseville, CA; Edward (Janice) of SLC, Utah; Walter (Lori) of Medford, OR; and Robert (Dana) of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by two brothers, Raymond and Robert, and 15 grandchildren. Norwald was preceded in death by his daughter Rebecca Lopez, his brothers Marvin, Gordon, and Lawrence, and his first wife Margareta. Retired Commander Quiel served 22 years in the Navy. He was an ace fighter pilot during World War II and Korea, and received the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. The viewing will be held Friday, July 19, 2013, at 12 p.m., at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, 1299 E. Highland Avenue, San Bernardino, CA. Funeral services are at 1:00 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Montecito Memorial Park in Colton, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations to Hospice of the North Coast or any charity of your choice in his memory.
