Marvin Gerhard Quiel

Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend lost his battle with dementia and quietly passed away at Somerford Place in Redlands, California July 26, 2012 at the age of 87. Marvin was born in Pemberton, Minnesota on May 13, 1925 to Gustav and Nora Quiel and graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1944. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in June, 1946. He worked as an Aviation Electricians Mate Second Class in the Asiatic Pacific Area receiving the Victory Medal during his service. After discharge from the Navy, Marvin attended San Bernardino Valley Junior College where he graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in Electrical Engineering and later obtained a California State Electrician License. After working as an electrician on a variety of construction projects, he became an employee of IBM where he worked as a Customer Service Engineer for over 30 years. In 1948 Marvin married Hazel Azvedo who bore four children: Susie Snowdon, John Quiel, Don Quiel, and Debi Morisoli. He later married Meredith Wattenbarger with whom he lived happily for over 30 years until his death. Marvin cherished Meredith and her two children: Judy Puritz and Bonnie Rettig and their wonderful families. Meredith was not only Marvin's beloved wife, but his soul mate who provided years of loving care as his health declined. Family was always at the center of Marvin and Meredith's world. He loved his many recreational and shop projects with family members throughout his long and rewarding life. He is survived by his three brothers, their 6 children, 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who will sorely miss him. Marvin's Christian walk of kindness and compassion served as a model for family and friends. As a life-long member of First English Lutheran Church, he was deeply committed to the welfare of the church and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For 33 years Marvin donated his electrical expertise to Lutheran Braille to facilitate multilingual publications. Please join the family in celebrating the life of Marvin on Tuesday, July 31st at 2:00 at the Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA. 92518.
