Bigler, Morrisdale Man Dies

Charles K Maines, 49, of Bigler, killed instantly when a 6-wheel Army truck rolled over on him.

According to Pvt. James Johnson and Pvt. Norbert Hogel of the Clearfield State Police, Maines was a passenger in a car driven by Charles A. Passmore, 65, of Clearfield, R.D. 3, which collided head-on with an Army truck on Route 322, three miles east of Clearfield, at 12:30 a. m. Sunday.

The heavy truck, loaded with provisions, was a part of a convoy of three trucks and three jeeps of the 112th Infantry Service Company of the-28th division of the Pennsylvania National Guard. The convey was en route to its station in Eric from maneuvers at Indiantown Gap.

According to the State Police, Maines was thrown from the Passmore car when it collided with the first of the three heavy trucks after narrowly missing the jeep leading the convoy.

Witnesses at the scene of the accident stated that Passmore was traveling east on Route 122 on the wrong side of the highway. They stated that the lead jeep had gone off on the berm to avoid a collision and that the driver of the truck involved in the accident had also attempted to swerve out of the way of the approaching vehicle. In doing this the truck hit an embankment, swerved around, hitting the left front of the Passmore car, driving it into the guard rail. The truck overturned and caught fire but the flames were soon extinguished by the soldiers from the convoy.

Passmore denied that he had been driving on the wrong side of the road.

Maines who was in the back seat of the car at the time of the collision was thrown to the highway and crushed beneath the dual wheels of the truck.

Both Passmore and Mrs. Bertha Buchanan, also a passenger in the Passmore car, were removed to the Clearfield Hospital. Although the extent of their injuries had not been definitely determined this morning. Mrs. Buchanan, whose condition was given as "fair," was believed to be suffering from head and body bruises and a laceration of the lip. Passmore suffered abrasions of the head, chest and legs. His condition was stated as "good.

The driver of the truck, Ralph Robert Warren, 20, of Erie, was uninjured.

The members of the National Guard traveling in the truck involved in the accident were driven to Erie later by Paul E. Mehaffie, William M. Morris, and William F. Palmer, of the local unit of the National Guard.

Deputy Coroner Frank Gillung stated there would be no inquest held.

The 1990 model car driven by Passmore, was demolished and damage to the truck was estimated at approximately $400.
