Robert was the son of George C. and Elizabeth "Betty" Hamm Cook. As a young man he moved to Ellis County, Texas where he met and married Eliza Jane Wilson August 15th 1897. Their first four children were born in Ennis, Texas and they then moved to Colt, Ark. where two children died. The family then moved to the Shady Grove area of Prentiss County, Ms. finally settling in the Pratt Community of Lee County, Ms.
