In 1930 she won an award and was able to go to the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee, which was her first train ride. She attended 10th, 11th, 12th grades at Marinette where she worked for her room and board at the Lindem family home. They introduced her to music and she was able to attend wonderful concerts. Everyone in her large family went to Marinette for her high school graduation. Her new dress did not come from the mail order house on time, so she had to wear a made-over dress for the ceremony.
The next two years Fae stayed at home to help with the family while her mother was sick; baking bread, cooking, scrubbing clothes, gardening and helping her father in any way she could.
Fae then went off to Stephenson Teachers Training School, just across the border in Michigan. She was the only one of three who got a job offer. She then taught school at Smeester School outside of Amberg where there were 21 students in grades one thru eight. She taught at Nulf School for two years and Amberg School for two more years. Fae went to Stevens Point for summer school and took correspondence classes, going to night school getting her closer to her teaching degree which she received from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.
While teaching at Stephenson, Michigan she met Delbert Hallfrisch at a dance. He was driving milk truck for Henry DeMille and Fae's brother, Lester also drove one of the trucks. On May 6, 1939 Fae married Delbert in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. After the wedding they moved to Marquette, in the upper peninsula of Lake Superior, Michigan where Delbert worked at a wood manufacturing plant. They had two daughters and while she was a homemaker she also worked in the office at Bunny Bread Bakery.
They lived in the same house all the years they were in Marquette. Fae wrote letters to everyone in the family and always went home to see her parents and helped them financially when needed.
Delbert died June 9, 1973 in Marquette, after his passing Fae remained in her home. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the World Service Guild, Chapter ES of P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Marquette General Hospital Auxiliary, Northern Michigan University Retires Group and her church circle. She was a volunteer at the Marquette Senior Center and was a poll judge for the election board.
Fae Andrist Hallfirsch died May 5, 2000 at the age of 86 at the home of her daughter. Her memorial service was held March 11 at the First Methodist Church in Marquette, with burial in the First United Methodist Church Memorial Garden.
